They don't wear badges and uniforms. They don't wear trench coats and use magnifying glasses. They don't hide in dark alleys with night vision equipment. They are some of the best crime solvers in the business. They are seen walking the halls of our schools daily.
The Not In My School program was introduced into the Hopkins County School System in 1998. The program is in response to the wave of violence seen in our schools throughout the nation. Co-sponsored by Crime Stoppers of Hopkins County, the Madisonville Police Department, and the Hopkins County Board of Education, the Not In My School program links up students and school administrators with law enforcement to change their institutions into safer, more enjoyable places to learn.
The key to the program is to offer anonymity to someone who wishes to provide information concerning violence and/or crimes within their school. Peer pressure and the fear of reprisal are the two major factors keeping good students from providing needed information to school authorities and law enforcement personnel. This program addresses those issues. Additionally, rewards are offered if the information proves instrumental in preventing or solving a crime. Statistics show that students only collect about 6% of the rewards issued to them indicating that the motivating factor for the student is rarely the reward offered.
With Not In My School in place, the atmosphere of the school changes rapidly. Students begin thinking twice before committing an act of vandalism, selling or possessing drugs, or bringing a weapon or dangerous instrument onto school property. These potential violators will realize that other students will report their behavior through their school program. If this procedure is followed the crime or violence will be detected early enough to be prevented.
Through the Not In my School program, Hopkins County Crime Stoppers is encouraging students to come forward and take action against crime and victimization at their school. Crime Stoppers of Hopkins County wants to promote school spirit, pride and responsibility while removing crime from our schools and put education first.
Crime Stoppers and school officials hope students will step up and inform others that crime and violence will not be tolerated and then Hopkins County students can truly say & help; Not In My School.
